About The Elm Building

The Elm building has been a landmark in Old Town Elk Grove for nearly a century. Originally built as a hotel, it was owned and operated by Alpha Adams and her husband, Edwin Lawrence Macy, after whose initials (E.L.M.) the establishment was named. While the first floor was intended for commercial use, the second floor was designed with several boarding rooms and a shared bathroom.

In the 1920s, The Elm was transformed into an apartment building. Many of the Elk Grove elementary and high school teachers called The Elm home, as did relatives of local ranchers when they were visiting. Eventually, the building returned to its original roots as a commercial space and, in 1997, the surrounding area was designated the Elk Grove Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Old Town houses a variety of retail shops and businesses, serving as a "main street" for the Elk Grove community. One Country Shop is proud to make its home in The Elm and be a part of the district's future.
